Marble quarries in the mountains above Carrera, Italy

For centuries marble from this region has been broken out of the many quarries in these mountains. This marble is well known for its purity and high quality.

For most of the locals it is their livelihood.

Nowadays other countries, most recently China, offer cheaper marble, which has caused many family businesses to close.
